Checking Amateur, Novice Amateur & Novice Youth Cards
Amateur, Novice Amateur and Novice Youth cards (originals or copies) must be presented at the show in order to be eligible to compete in any of these divisions. Temporary cards should be offered to exhibitors in the event a current Amateur/Novice Amateur/Novice Youth card cannot be provided.
Please keep the following in mind when verifying eligibility:
- Be sure the card is for the current year.
- Be sure the novice exhibitor is eligible for all the class categories they have entered.
- If they do not have a card in their possession, they must complete a temporary card application and submit all applicable fees in order to be eligible to compete.
- APHA renewal applications should not be accepted in lieu of the temporary card application.
- If a temporary card was applied for at a previous show, but the exhibitor has not received the original card from APHA, the exhibitor must present the temporary card as proof or reapply.
- If an exhibitor states they have sent in their application to the APHA, but do not have a card to present to show management upon entering, a temporary card must be applied for in order to be eligible to compete at that show.
- Amateur duplicate applications:
- If an Amateur card has been applied for and processed by the APHA, but has not been received by the applicant or the applicant is unable to present their current Amateur card at the show, a temporary card must be purchased from the show secretary. All duplicate applications will cost $30 ($25 rush fee and $5 duplicate card fee.)
- If an Amateur card has been applied for, but has NOT been received or processed by the APHA, the temporary card will be processed and the original application fees will be refunded by the APHA.
- All exhibitors who do not have current cards processed at the time of the show or who have not applied for a temporary card, will not be eligible to receive any APHA points.

Show Approval Reminders
- Additional pending requirements (such as names of judges, names of show management, etc.) that are needed in order to approve your show should be received in the APHA office no later than 30 days prior to the show. This allows APHA sufficient time to notify the show management and the judges that the show is approved.
- Once a class list is submitted, the list of classes can only be amended up to 30 days prior to the show by written notification to APHA. (SC-090.D)
- Please use the most recent show application form supplied by APHA or available online. Outdated versions do not contain all necessary requirements and we will be unable to accept them.
- Please be sure to hire your judge(s) by written contract prior to listing them on the show approval application.
- If you are not planning on holding a show you held in previous years, please let us know immediately so we can release the dates for other clubs. (SC-090.H.3)
- Please check your show listing in the Paint Horse Journal and on the APHA Web site for accuracy.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact Linda Knowles, Show Approval Coordinator at (817) 834-2742, ext. 245 or by e-mail.

Scheduling Suggestion
Offer Open (Regular Registry) halter classes and Grand and Reserve Champion prior to Solid Paint-Bred halter classes.
It is best not to have the Solid Paint-Bred halter classes before selection of Open (Regular Registry) Grand and Reserve Champions because it is often confusing to the exhibitors about who is eligible to go back in for the Grand and Reserve Champion class. Offering a Solid Paint-Bred Grand and Reserve Champion class is optional.
|
Solid Paint-Bred/Breeding Stock Classes Required
Effective, January 1, 2006, all APHA-approved shows must offer the following Solid Paint-Bred/Breeding Stock classes: Note: APHA show assessment fees for all Solid Paint-bred classes have been waived for 2007 and 2008.
- Six (6) open halter classes to include at least two (2) mare classes and at least two (2) gelding classes.
- Two (2) open performance classes.
Solid Paint-bred halter classes can be offered in the following ways:
Four Age Divisions Per Sex Division
- Yearlings
- Two-year-olds
- Three-year-olds
- Four-year-olds and older
OR
Two Age Divisions Per Sex Division
Yearlings and two-year-olds
Three-year-olds and older
OR
Junior (Three-year olds and under)
Senior (Four-year-olds and over)
Solid Paint-bred Grand and Reserve Champions are optional. Solid Paint-bred weanling classes are also optional.
Note: Solid Paint-bred registered horses cannot compete in Regular Registry classes.
If the Solid Paint-bred classes are not large enough to make an APHA pointed class, Solid Paint-bred classes can be combined. If the Regular Registry classes are not large enough to make an APHA pointed class, the Regular Registry classes can be combined.

Green Working Hunter
Effective January 1, 2007, horses competing in Green Working Hunter may also enter their respective Working Hunter class (Jr., Sr., All Ages) at the same show. However, Green Working Hunter does not count for show all-around or high-point awards.
|
Geldings Still Listed as Stallions
Be sure to check the Certificate of Registration to ensure that all horses entered in gelding classes are actually recorded as geldings and not stallions according to APHA records. If the Certificate of Registration shows the horse is a stallion at the time the show results are processed at the APHA office, the horse will be disqualified, but the horse will still count as an entry in the class. This applies to all divisions – open, amateur and youth.
Please advise the exhibitors of this rule and encourage them to submit the original Certificate of Registration to the APHA for correction immediately. There is no charge for this service.
|
Show Results Reminders
Here are a few things to remember when processing your final show results.
- Failure to mail the show results 15 days from the last day of the show may result in future show approval being denied.
- Be sure to submit judge evaluations for all shows along with the show results, all show assessment fees and judges cards.
- Remember: All Solid Paint-Bred show assessment fees have been waived for 2007 and 2008.
- Recording the number of entries in a class - Be sure to record all entries that exhibited in each class including disqualifications and no-scores. Even when all entries are disqualified by the judge(s), the entries must be entered in the roster and reported on the final show results. If a horse is disqualified, it is not to be placed, regardless of the number of horses in a class, but counts as an entry in the class when determining the total number of entries.
- Disqualifications due to wrong entry number. When an entry has shown with the wrong entry number and is therefore disqualified, the APHA needs to know what the correct number of the entry exhibited was supposed to be.
- Please enter the correct entry number and horse on the results roster/edit/diskette.
- The judges should initial the corrections on their cards, however; if this is not possible, the show secretary should initial any changes related to wrong entry numbers along with a brief notation on the cards indicating the same.
(e.g. DQ – wrong back #)
- It is also helpful to include a brief note of explanation along with your results alerting the APHA of these situations. This will prevent unnecessary delays in processing your show results.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact LeAnn Fast, Show Results Coordinator, by phone at (817) 834-2742, ext. 244 or e-mail.

Revamped Gelding Plus Incentive Program Offers Big Paybacks in 2007
APHA recently introduced exciting changes to its Gelding Plus program, which is designed to increase the value of registered Paint geldings.
Originally created as a futurity incentive, the program has changed to instead promote aged geldings that are 4 years old and older as of Jan. 1, 2007. The Gelding Plus Incentive program offers $3,000 to geldings in each of the 14 approved APHA shows. Enrollment is automatic for all geldings.
Awarded through APHA’s High-Point Performance calculation system, the new Gelding Plus program provides the owners of these horses an opportunity to compete for bonus incentives through one of three options designated by the Zone Show Committee.
- One Division: The Regular Registry show high-point performance gelding from the Open, Amateur and Youth classifications is awarded the total $3,000 of added money.
- Two Divisions: The Regular and Solid Paint-Bred Registries’ show high-point performance geldings from the Open, Amateur and Youth classifications are awarded $2,500 and $500, respectively.
- Three Divisions: The Regular Registry show high-point performance geldings in the Open, Amateur and Youth classifications are awarded $1,000 each.
The first event to implement the new Gelding Plus format was the recent National Western Stock Show, which held Paint classes Jan. 8–11 in Denver, Col. The show paid out $1,000 each to geldings in three divisions.
Congratulations to the Zone 3 Gelding Plus winners:
Open - Classys Sacred Ticket, owned by Kay Chester of Avon, Col., and ridden by Karen Banister
Amateur - JB Country, owned and ridden by Greg Dickey of Colorado Springs, Col.
Youth - JB Quick, owned by Katelyn & Annette Gray of Elbert, Col., and ridden by Katelyn Gray
For more information about the new Gelding Plus program and how you can take part, contact Jessica McDaniel at (817) 834-2742, ext. 249 or visit apha.com.

Awards will be personalized and mailed by the APHA to the winning horse owners after the show. Winning horse owners must be current members in good standing of the APHA and reside in the zone to be eligible. Trophies will be awarded according to the rules set forth by the zone show management
